How to Import RC Cars from China: A Guide for Hobby Retailers

By Ramii Wang ยท Founder, HELLAMAX ยท Updated 2026-08-16

China makes the vast majority of the world's RC cars. For a hobby retailer or distributor, importing directly is almost always more profitable than reselling from a domestic wholesaler โ€” but only if you import well. After a decade in the toy trade, here is the playbook we give our own buyers.

1. Know exactly what you're buying

Before you ask for a price, get the specs straight. The big levers are scale (1/14 and 1/16 sell well at retail; 1/10 is the enthusiast tier), brushless vs brushed (brushless is faster and more durable โ€” the modern default), and RTR vs kit (ready-to-run sells to casual buyers; kits sell to hobbyists). A typical strong seller is a 1/14 brushless 4WD monster truck doing ~40 km/h with a 7.4V pack.

2. Factory vs trading company

You can buy from a single factory โ€” but a factory only sells its own models, and MOQs are often high. A trading/sourcing partner like HELLAMAX lets you combine multiple brands in one shipment, lower the effective MOQ, get spare parts, and have one person accountable for QC and shipping. For most overseas retailers, that beats juggling five factories.

3. MOQ and mixed containers

Don't assume you need a full container. Many lines start from one carton, and you can mix models (e.g. MJX 14208 + 12212) to reach better pricing. As volumes grow, consolidate cars, tanks, boats and blocks into a single container to spread ocean freight.

4. Shipping and Incoterms

Most RC cars ship FOB (you control ocean + import) or DDP (seller handles duties and delivers to your door). RC cars contain lithium batteries, which are dangerous goods: expect UN38.3 test reports and MSDS, and use a freight forwarder experienced with batteries. (See our DDP vs DDU vs FOB guide for the full comparison.)

5. Quality inspection

Always do a pre-shipment inspection: check appearance, function (does it drive, steer, charge?), and packing. A 30-minute check per batch saves you a container of returns. We photograph and function-test before goods leave the warehouse.

6. Samples and payment

Order samples first โ€” a small batch proves the product and the supplier. Standard payment is 30% deposit / 70% before shipment; build up terms as trust grows.

7. Common mistakes
