EU Import: Packaging, Battery & WEEE Info

By Ramii Wang · Founder, HELLAMAX · Updated 2026-08-16

The EU is a great RC market, but it ties importers in paperwork. This is a practical checklist of what European distributors must have in place before goods land. (Always confirm with your own compliance advisor — rules change.)

1. CE marking & the EU Declaration

RC toys need CE marking and a technical file. Toys specifically fall under the Toys Safety Directive / EN71. As the importer of record, you are the "manufacturer" for CE purposes — the docs travel with the product.

2. GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation)

From December 2024, the GPSR requires a designated EU responsible person and clear traceability/safety info on products and online listings. Budget for an EU rep and updated labels — this now affects nearly all consumer goods sold in the EU.

3. Batteries: the EU Battery Regulation

Because RC cars ship with Li-Po/Li-ion cells, the EU Battery Regulation applies: markings, hazard labels, and (for many batteries) collection/take-back and performance-label obligations. Keep UN38.3 and SDS handy — see our lithium shipping guide.

4. WEEE registration

Radio-controlled and electronic products are WEEE (e-waste) regulated. Most EU countries require registration in a national WEEE registry and a crossed-out wheelie-bin mark, plus a take-back scheme. Register before you import.

5. Packaging EPR (LUCID / Grüne Punkt)

Germany's LUCID (VerpackG) and similar EPR schemes elsewhere require you to register packaging and pay for its recycling. Get a LUCID number and a dual-system contract if you sell into Germany. France, Spain and others have their own schemes.

6. UKCA for Great Britain

Selling into the UK? UKCA marking applies alongside (or instead of) CE for the GB market. Treat UK as a separate compliance track from the EU.

7. How we help

We can supply the base compliance docs from the factory (CE/EN71 where applicable, battery marks, UN38.3, SDS) and consolidate shipments so your EU paperwork is one tidy bundle. But you still need your own EU responsible person and national registrations. Talk to us early — see Why HELLAMAX.
